Repeat- How To Promote Your Blog – Part 8

2009 November 12
by freewareelite

Note: This is a repeat of an old article – just ignore it because I need to link to alphainventions to submit my site.

Is this part 8 already? Anyway, this is the second - to – last issue of the “How to Promote your Blog” series. I’m sorry for the ten-day interval, but I found some great new programs these few days to post about, so here the post is [finally]!

Today I’m going to talk about AlphaInventions, another great blog channel surfing service similar to previously discussed BlogSurfer.us. This time it’s a bit different in a sense that,

  • This service aims to be a channel for collaboration between webmasters. For example, if you comment quickly on a blog just after a post is written up, the webmaster or author will be shocked at the speed his post is noticed, and will usually follow up, and maybe even visit your blog if you have one.
  • AlphaInventions helps you with this. It crawls the net looking for new blog posts, and those blogs are shown in the AlphaInventions window blog surfer. So people can be notified about your new blog posts immediately and provoke interaction between readers, bloggers and other webmasters.

Here’s what Cheru Jackson, the guy who created AlphaInventions, has to say:

If you update or publish your blog at the same time my visitors are browsing blogs in my site then my visitors will get a chance to see your blog in real-time. BAM! (the entire blog is in their face instantly) It’s not even annoying to watch.  Is it alpha addicts??

I also provide a link to your blog in case they want it to open your blog in a new window, or bookmark your blog . The links provides your title, and description to help my visitors get a better understanding on what your blog is about, and get more interested. Alphainventions.com is useful for wordpress.com , typepad.com, spaces.live.com, and blogger.com I love it, and want to grow it like a tree. Yahh!

To get more traffic from alphainventions.com just keep your blog updated or go to the homepage, and notify readers about your blog. It’s so simple.

More..

A realistic goal of mine for alphainventions.com is to provide a way for us to see only blogs that we are interested in update in real time, because this will provide more quality, and blogger interaction.

Interaction part is why I built the site.  It’s fun to see people come to your site and find it interesting as soon as you update or publish, so I want to provide a faster ways of doing this.

Earlier in the project I tried to make a fair, and logical way for people to submit their link every so often to get more readers for a short period of time, but so many people didn’t understand how the site worked so I guess they may have overlooked it. I’m thinking they didn’t know why they should submit their link.

Help please…

Everyone wants their blog to be read instantly, and I want to provide everyone with that experience.

If anyone here can provide an example of a full explanation on how the site works in better terms it will be greatly appreciated.

Good job to those who do understand how alphainventions.com works. If I looked at it from outside of my webmaster box I’d probably be a little confused about what alphainventions was at first sight.

Many people have their blogs set to ping services like weblogs.com when their blog has been published or updated. Visit http://alphainventions.com to block your blog from being read if you’d like.

So how do you submit the blog? Visit http://alphainventions.com, and wait for a while. When some other blog is fully loaded, click “Add My Blog” in the top. Type in your blog’s root url, and click validate. Now AlphaInventions validates your blog so it can know when your blog is updated. When the process is finished, the Submit button is enabled, just click it to finish the process.

Submit daily to get the best results!

Upgrading to Windows 7 – How about CPU?

2009 November 11

Windows 7 has been released for nearly 3 weeks already, and many people are starting to upgrade to this version of the Microsoft OS recently. While Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows Vista, it still needs a considerable amount of resources, e.g. RAM and CPU speed.

If your CPU speed doesn’t meet the minimum requirement to upgrade and you want to do so, you can look at the article about upgrading CPU on Tech- For Everyone, split into four parts, listed below.

Replacing or Upgrading Your CPU

Replacing or Upgrading Your CPU – Pt 2

Upgrading the CPU pt3 – Selecting A Processor

Upgrading Your CPU – Conclusion(s)

[...]

Intel dual core CPU on mobo I had long ago decided that I was going to install Windows 7 in the 64-bit version (my machine is not too old, and so it has the required 64-bit hardware) as my trials with the beta versions of 7 had been so stellar. 64-bit computing is officially here for us Average Folk, and it has many advantages. One of the nicest is the ability to “access” more RAM memory. [...]

So.. in celebration of Win7, I decided I would pack in as much RAM as my board would hold. (I wrote about that here, Windows 7 64-bit Adventures.) That gave me 8 Gigabytes and a certain amount of bragging rights.
(When I started computing, way back in the day, I honestly never dreamed I would one day have this much. [...]

Launchy: Great flashy launcher

2009 November 9

I generally don’t use launchers since I don’t like to slow my startup process with them. However, Launchy virtually starts in no time, and only uses ~500k of resources, and also it looks very cool, so I can’t resist in keeping it.

Launchy is a launcher that helps you open files, programs, etc. without needing to browse the start menu or any other folders. I install a lot of programs to test before writing about them on Freeware Elite, so my start menu is always clogged.

Launchy indexes the start menu and any other folders you want in realtime, so the search is always extremely quick. You just type in a few letters and a few choices appear. The number of choices in the menu shown depends on the settings.

You open the program by pressing a hotkey, Alt-Space by default (you can change this), and start typing to search. What’s great is that it can also do simple calculations quickly (+,-,*,/) by typing them in the search box.

Verdict: Great launcher because of the aesthetically pleasing interface and also the highly customizable settings. Only con is that there is no portable version (what did you expect? It runs on startup!:))

Version Tested: 2.1.2

Compatibility: Win 98 or above.

Email and Message Viruses/Malware for Facebook Users?

2009 November 7

Alright, so now many people use Facebook to connect to their friend, colleagues, classmates, etc. However, there are times when you receive email that tells you to confirm your facebook login credentials. Beware of malicious content on Facebook…

Case 1. Phishing attacks on your email address provided to Facebook

Lately there have been a lot of phishing attacks, seemingly from “service@facebook.com” telling you to click a link and type in your login credentials to confirm your account. This is fake!

Case 2. Email telling you to open attachment of reset password

Lately there have also been emails from also” service@facebook.com”  telling you that Facebook has reset your password “for security reasons” and attached is “your new password”. The attachment is a zip file called “Facebook_Password_**.zip”, where ** is your username.

This attachment seems innocent, but actually it is some carefully packaged malware. Once you download the attachment, your computer is infected and so are your friends. Thankfully, free security products such as AVG and Spyware Terminator will detect this malware.

Case 3. Private messages on Facebook telling you to view an interesting video

Recently, there have been multiple PMs on Facebook telling you that you have been captured on “hidden camera”, with a link to the video. If you click the link, you are redirected at least 3 times to a seemingly youtube video and tries to download a virus to your computer.

Fake Message:

Scam message

Seemingly geniune but false youtube site.

Fake Youtube

Now the site is trying to download some rogue antivirus app to my PC

Fake Antivirus

Let’s Quote What’s On My PC:

Do not open email, let alone attachments, that you even have the slightest doubt. Trust me, if the doubt is there, it is most likely fake and contains malware.

Copy Path adds a context menu entry to copy filepaths

2009 November 5

Normally when you needed to copy file paths, you needed to right-click on a file, select Properties and copy the path from within. This is a cumbersome process, and it’s compulsory to have a separate context menu entry to copy the file’s full path, file name, etc.

Copy Path does this for us by adding a submenu to files and folders’ context menus allowing you to copy the folder path of the folder the file is in, the file’s full path or only the file’s name plus extension, as illustrated in the example below.

You can also select multiple files and copy their paths all to the clipboard, from which you can paste into Word, Notepad, etc.

Verdict: Great extension. A must-have in everyone’s arsenal of utilities.

Note: There are three more utilities on the Internet with the same name and do the same thing, but this is the best, so use the download link provided below.

Compatibility: WinAll.

It’s been a long time since this blog started our updates from Kevin’s FreePrintable.net.

I’ve now dumped the updates – I’ve lost sponsorship from Kevin.

So, do you know what is a Browser?

2009 October 29

What is a browser? I bet that most people who read this blog know that. According to Google, Google conducted a survey  in New York a month ago asking passers-by what a web browser is.

It was not surprising, that  tech savvy users answered the question correctly, that most who were asked did not know what a web browser was. Most who were able to answer the question defined a web browser as a website or search engine.

What is a browser (again)?

A browser, according to Wikipedia, is…

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources.

Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by web servers in private networks or files in file systems.

So, were you able to answer the question? Google has recently begun to educate the public on the topic of browsers. They created a video:

If you weren’t able to answer the question above, you are highly recommended to visit Google’s website on browsers (not only on Chrome), What Browser.

Gridy: a great active window manager by Sector Seven

2009 October 27

So you always open a lot of windows on your PC? Do they look confusing, or do you think that it’s too easy to drag a window outside your view and it’s a bit annoying to drag them back? Gridy can help you.

Gridy is a great active window management app that’s easy to use, uses small amount of resources, and is really cool. Gridy is invoked via HotKey, and you can always remind yourself of the combinations in the settings screen. Here are more notes on this great app:

  • One of the predominantly best functions of the program is that it automatically drags your windows to grid Gridy - snap to grid windowwhen you move them around. This means that you just have to throw a window at the side of your screen to make it snap back to touch the side of the screen in fashion as shown in screenshot on the right.
  • You can also:
    • Make windows semi or totally transparent
    • Minimize all windows except the active one using Win+PageDown (GREAT ONE SECTOR SEVEN!)
    • Hide the window’s icon on Alt-Tab
    • Set Window to be always on top, etc.

Gridy hotkey and feature list

Verdict: Overall this is a great app that can do almost everything that you will want with the windows that you always wanted to be in control of.

Compatibility: Win 98 and up.

FreePrintable.net updates #16

2009 October 25

Okay, so halloween is approaching, and Kevin has added some halloween printables on his network…

Sure, it’s fall, but I’m thinking of declaring this “Printables Season.” I’m very excited, because several new printables sites I’ve had in the works for months, or even years, are all coming together at once. Meanwhile, I’m adding lots of new printables for the fall and winter holidays: Halloween (new cards just added to FreePrintableGreetingCards.net, plus invitations at PrintInvitations.net!), Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah. You’ll learn about something new at FreePrintable.net in each edition of coming newsletters, so please keep reading! My latest site is CVtemplates.net, with curriculum vitae (specialty resumes) for business and academic settings. Also, several of you have asked for an update on my new “office cats,” Pixel and Voxel. I’m happy to report that this feline brother-and-sister pair is thriving! Even their recent surgery (we got them “fixed”) didn’t slow them down. The kittens love to cuddle each other – I rarely see one without the other. The vet said the technical term is “extremely bonded.” Whatever it’s called, it’s very cute! Here’s a pic: http://twitpic.com/j3aar

You may be familiar with my site InstantResumeTemplates.com, which was launched last year and now has more than 65 resume templates to download, customize, and print for free. I don’t know if it’s the state of the economy, but there has been a lot of interest in these printable resumes.

So, to continue to fill the needs of job-seekers, Kevin has now added CVtemplates.net, a site focusing on curriculum vitae, which are commonly used by educators as well as people in other fields, to communicate their academic and work experience.

These professional templates are available in both letter and A4 size, as CVs are especially common in Europe. Some of the templates are specific to European standards, such as the Europass CV that follows a framework set by the European Union. There are also CV templates for specific professions, such as nursing, marketing, management, and technical fields. Here are the CV templates:

www.CVtemplates.net

There are 40 CV templates to choose from, in various column formatting and designs. They are all free to instantly download and print in .DOC (Microsoft Word) format. Just type over the placeholder text with your own information.

Halloween Cards

When it comes to Halloween costumes and decorations, do you go for cute or spooky? I have two daughters, so I get both: The 2-year-old likes to be cute, while the 12-year-old likes to be spooky. Similarly, there are both cute and creepy Halloween cards among the recent additions to FreePrintableGreetingCards.net. There are smiling jack-o-lanterns, scary ghosts and more in varying card sizes. And, for those Halloween parties, check out the new Halloween invitations at PrintInvitations.net. They’re free to download and print in PDF form. Or, if you’d like to customize them with your own text in Microsoft Word, opt for the $4 (cards) or $6 (invitations) premium .DOC version. See the new Halloween cards and invitations here, if you dare:

FreePrintable.net updates – #16

2009 October 23

Whew! We’ve seen a lot of those featured FreePrintable updates on my webpage, but this might by far be the smallest…

As you read this, I’m on my way back from a very special family function: my grandfather’s 90th birthday! He’s not only had a long life, but an interesting one. He worked on jet seat belts and ejection seat systems in the 1950s for Rocket Jet (which I’m sure sounded like a really cool, futuristic name for a company back in the ’50s.) I loved hearing the old stories and family legends at my grandfather’s birthday party and I’m excited to share them with my own kids. Speaking of which, if you have celebrations coming up, or any family or business occasion due of recognition, I hope you remember to visit FreePrintableCertificates.net, PrintableBanners.net, and the other FreePrintable.net sites that offer place cards, labels, announcements, and more. I’ve just added 40 new certificates to FreePrintableCertificates.net, including many for scouting, others with blank borders, plus several for Halloween. Plus, there are a bunch of new banners at PrintableBanners.net. Have you tried the custom Banner Maker yet? It’s pretty cool. All of these new additions are thanks to site user requests, so please keep your ideas coming!

As he says, Kevin has had a lot of requests for even more flexible certificate designs at FreePrintableCertificates.net, with decorative borders but no specific title or text referencing the type of award. With these new blank certificates, you get to fill in all the details. There are very basic designs, pretty floral borders, and colorful borders: just nice frames, ready to go! Also, there’s such a great response to Kevin’s scouting award and participation certificates that he has added more, for both boy and girl scouts as well as parent volunteers. Now troops can have the certificates they need in hand, immediately. There are also new gift certificates tailored to specific retail needs such as chocolate, wine, and jewelry. Plus, check out the new Halloween certificates! There are designs for costume contests and pumpkin carving contests. There are other new designs, too, such as a guardian angel certificate, a marriage certificate with a design for destination weddings, and more. You can see all the new certificates here:

www.FreePrintableCertificates.net/category/new

All of the certificates are free to instantly download and print in PDF form. Or, if you want to customize a certificate by typing the details into the computer rather than writing on the printed certificate, choose the $5 premium .DOC (Microsoft Word) version.

The banners at PrintableBanners.net are so handy when you need to decorate for a family party or business event. With these pre-designed banners, you don’t have to spend time formatting typefaces and making sure everything is sized to print out correctly. These banners print with one letter per standard 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheet of paper. Just print them out and hang them up! The new additions include seasonal and celebratory banners such as “Happy Halloween” and “It’s a Girl.” Whether you’re having a car wash or honoring a retirement, I hope you find the banners you need here. If not, please consider the custom Banner Maker to generate as many banners as you want for 24 hours. It’s here: www.PrintableBanners.net/custom.php. And here are the new banners:

Everything: Great NTFS Search Tool

2009 October 22

So, you have always made use of the Windows Search tool. It does it work great, but it’s slow and also does not have so many credentials as one might expect. So, we could install some external search utilities.

Everything is a great tool for searching NTFS Drives. It has right-click context menu integration to offer, and it’s quickness is due to the fact that it uses the Master File Table of NTFS Drives to do indexing. This means that it will not be able to search other file drives such as USBs, CDs, and FAT 16,32,12 drives.Everything search

The building of the indexing database is very quick. A index of 1 million files would take about 1.2 seconds, and my 22 GB C: partition took 18 seconds to index. Also, Everything updates it’s database realtime according to the Master File Table, so you’ll never have to manually update the index database. More notes on the prog:

  • Context Menu Integration: You can right-click on any file or folder to search its contents and the results will be displayed in a list.
  • Search-as-you-type: You can filter the search results by typing in the filtering box after the search has been completed.
  • Filtering: (a) boolean operators, (b) wildcards, and (c) “regular expressions”. Please go here to get an idea of how to use the search syntax.
  • Searching of HTTP/FTP/ETP servers: You can ask Everything to search a webpage, a server, a domain name, etc. but it is not so fast as Everything doesn’t index all the files on the web. (it would take forever)
  • Only supports NTFS Drives. [Click Here] to see how to convert FAT32 drives to NTFS Drives.
  • Resource use and database size: Resource use is extremely small and entirely negligible. Database size for 1,000,000 files is about 5~6 MB.
  • Unfortunately, there is no Portable version.

Verdict: The best search tool for NTFS Drives I’ve ever seen. Also the quickest. Highly recommended!

Version Tested: 1.2.1.371

Compatibility:Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7 and 2008

OpenOffice 3.2 Beta released

2009 October 21

OpenOffice, the widely acclaimed open source office suite and potential rival to Microsoft Office, has released a long-awaited update. They recently released OpenOffice 3.2’s beta version, which has some large improvements. If you had not previously followed Freeware Elite’s suggestion to upgrade to the quicker GoOo, you should upgrade to OO3.2 now.

This is a summarized version of the improvements boasted in this version:

  • The Bubble Chart is available as new chart type now
  • Keyboard shortcut configuration dialog now supports “ALT” modifier
  • Removed the password length limitation in ODF document password creation dialog
  • Menu items display changed
  • Support for PS-OpenType fonts
  • Impress and Draw now support comments (formerly known as sticky notes) to support collaboration
  • More filter criteria in “Standard Filter” dialog
  • The full improvements/changelist can be accessed by [CLICKING HERE].

You can download the OOBeta 3.2 [CLICK HERE].

GOTD: AnyBizSoft PDF to Powerpoint Converter

    2009 October 20

Giveaway Of The Day is a site that gives away legal full versions of shareware and commercial software daily. Today, I came across a great program by AnyBizSoft – their PDF to Powerpoint Converter.

To be honest, I’ve never seen such kind of software before – and it’s likely to be unique. I have never came across any freeware alternatvie for PDF to PPT conversion – I googled it. If you can find any, comment in the comments section and I’ll check it out. (I will link to your site if you have one :) )

So, let’s get into details with this program. PDF files are handy, but you cannot edit them unless you convert them into a Word file, text file, etc. (e.g. with SomePDF). This prog now lets you convert them into powerpoints, which is great, but might not be useful for everyone (word files are much more convenient).

    Description per developer

PDF to PowerPoint (PDF to PPT) is a professional PDF solution to convert PDF files to PowerPoint presentations. PDF to PowerPoint fulfills your conversion by one click. The original layouts, text content, images, and hyperlinks are exactly retained in the generated PPT files. Batch conversion and fast processing help you save the time. You can convert PDF to PowerPoint 2010, 2007 or 2003 without any problems. You just need to import PDF files and click Convert, then the converter will do the rest for you.

    Key Features:

    • Convert PDF files to PPT presentations quickly and accurately;
    • Retain all the original layouts, text content, images, and hyperlinks;
    • Support encrypted PDF file conversion;
    • Batch convert 200 PDF files at the same time;
    • Support Microsoft PowerPoint 2010;
    • Support languages: English, Turkish, Thai, Latin, Korean, Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese;
    • More details..

     More pros:

    • Easy to use interface.
    • Fairly quick conversion speed.
    • Conversion accuracy is great compared to other PDF2Word utilities.
    • Resource use is not bad.

So, now you know the great things of this program; the conversion results are excellent, except for a slight error in converting the background of pdf files. Following are the CONS:

    • The biggest con is that it requires Microsoft Powerpoint to work. OpenOffice Impress is not supported, I hope the developer will think over this point.
    • If there are a few images in a page, they are sometimes combined into one image which you’ll have to do some manual cropping.
    • Sometimes the result powerpoints are 15+ times larger than original file (perhaps because the ppt file structure is a bit different from Word or PDF), but sometimes the compression rate is great (30~50%). This con comes from a conversion of 6 test powerpoints.

Verdict: As this is perhaps the unique free (only for today though:() PDF to PPT converter, it is suggested to grab it… You never know when you will need it :) )
