Folder Size: How to show size of folders in Windows Explorer

Version Tested: 2.4

Description:  Have you ever wanted a straightforward way to see the total size of folders in Windows Explorer? Before I came across this program accidentally, I had to right click on a folder and select “Properties” to do this because the default “Size” column in Windows Explorer only shows the sizes of individual files.

Folder Size is a program that installs a new column in Windows Explorer which shows the Folder Size. (see screenshots below) It uses the Windows “Folder Cache” to calculate the sizes of folders silently in the background without using any system resources. This is why, in my previous review of CCleaner, I suggested not to delete Windows Size/Location cache because this would slow down the cache scanning for Folder Size.BeforeFS

How to show the Folder Size column after Installing:

  1. Right Click on the “Size” column in Windows Explorer.
  2. Select “Folder Size” further down the drop-down and Folder Size will appear. Similarly, right click on “Folder Size” column and de-select “Size” and the “Size”column will disappear.
  3. Now drag the “Folder Size” column to where you want it to be.
  4. Next Click on tools -> folder options.
  5. On “View” tab, select “apply to all folders”
  6. Click “OK” and the process is done.

Verdict: This is a very nice program that I have been searching for ages. Pity it appeared only on entry 45 when I googled “Show Folder Sizes on Windows”, or else it would be much earlier that I started using this program. Big thanks to the developer!

How long did it take you to write this?

Did you mean the whole blog or the post? The Folder Size post took about 15 minutes to write, while the whole blog has already lasted for 4 and a half month. A 12820 reader mark is a great achievement in just 130 days, as many of my friend bloggers say. Anyway, thanks for commenting!
