Email This: A program installing a button on your browser so that you can mail every page you’re browsing

2009 June 18

Version Tested: 1.0

Description: Nowadays, with the tech world grower larger and larger, we often see a “email this” link on websites. They automatically open your default email application, whether webmail client or local client, and enters the whole site into that piece of email. This is a great convenience for those who need quick archiving of web pages (at a certain time) or those that regularly share websites with friends.email-this-screenshot2

However, sometimes the “Email this” button cannot be found, either because it was hidden away somewhere in a page, or else that the website author did not install the button — like I don’t for instance, because I don’t know how to do so. I’m still investigating for a appropriate “Email this” button for WordPress.com blogs.

Anyhow, this program will be a great help to those two kinds of peoples mentioned in the first paragraph, by installing a small button on the “Links”(IE) or “Bookmarks” (FF) bar in your browser. When you click this button, the default email client is not opened; instead a new window will be opened, allowing you to type your own email address, the receiver’s email address, the email’s title and optionally a short message together with the email sent.

  • If you register for the Email This service, then you can store your own email address and an address book for the recipients.
  • Installtion does not involve downloading anything, read the following procedures. (screenshot tutorial at the bottom of the review)
    1. On the page with link provided below, there are three buttons at the bottom.
    2. To install the first button, I right-clicked on it and selected “Add to Favourites…”
    3. There was a IE warning about “adding a favourite that may not be safe”. You can safely ignore this warning, and click “Yes”.
    4. Add the favourite to the “Links” folder by highlighting on “Links” in the left panel and clicking “Add”.
    5. Enable the “Links” toolbar by using IE: View -> Toolbars -> Activating “Links”.
    6. Do the same to the remaining two buttons and the installation is finished.
  • There is a online bookmark service bundled in the “Organize and Share” button, which is accessible through registration. Same as Google Toolbar and ALToolbar, I don’t want to be bothered by logging-in each time to see my bookmarks, I will stick to IE Favourites.

Verdict: This is a very nice button to be added to your IE toolbars, especially if you don’t want to open your email client just for a “Email This” link. This button would be much quicker.

Compatibility: IE, Firefox, Opera, AOL, MSN; most likely other browsers as well.
