[How To] back up your favourites
The Internet Explorer Favourites are the way that IE bookmarks sites by saving the link in an specific folder. I’m sure IE users will use this feature, but what if you re-install your Windows, or switch a new computer? If you have a lot of entries (I have around 250), it would take a long time to get them back. So, IE has provided a way to backup your favourites. There are two ways to do this:
- Browse to your local Favourites folder, this is usually at: C:[rootdrive]\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Favourites.
- Copy out all of the entries onto a USB stick or any removable media.
- To restore them, copy those entries into your new Favourites folder, directory same as above.
OR: (Following only for IE 7 & 8 users)
- Open your IE browser.
- Beside the usual place where you open the favourites dialog, there is a star icon with a “add” symbol on it. (see screenshot) Click on that button.
- On the menu that appears, select “Import and Export…”
- A wizard appears to guide you through the steps. Select “Export Favourites”.
- Click through the wizard and you’re done.
- To restore, select “Import Favourites” in the same wizard.
