GMail now requiring Cell Phone number
Until recently, GMail has been IMHO the best web-based free email on the planet, because of it’s quickness and ease-of-use. However, starting yesterday, new GMail users from the USA have been required to supply their cell phone numbers in order to create an account.
This means that your mobile phone is going to be spammed?! Why does Google want to do this? They say that this requirement will spread to new users outside the US soon, and later to all GMail users. So, you have to be prepared and backup all your information on your GMail account and change to another mail list. See [THIS ARTICLE] for a comparison of some free email services.

Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks,
This policy is stupid, I will be boycotting google now and I think a lot of others will to. I will start using yahoo again for websearching and email!
Hey Jim,
You´re quite right, it´s really stupid.
It’s ROCK, dude..!! Good job
Hmmm …. Does Google have some sort of legal existence in Australia?
I assume it does. They could have a problem if they misuse mobile (cell) phone numbers, because Australia has “do not call” legislation which makes it illegal to engage in unsolicited mobile phone advertising calls for listed numbers. On the other hand, this does not apply if the phone holder is a customer of the caller. Which I guess a Google email user might be. Uh oh – back to Hotmail
Yes, you are right. After some research, I can confirm that GMail users are “customers” of Google and their phone calls are not illegal.
